Spyro 2 Ripto’s Rage

Background

Spyro 2 Ripto’s Rage was released on November 2, 1999. This was a quickly made sequel since it was only made a year after the first game.

The Tale

Spyro 2 starts off with the purple dragon wanting to take a vacation to Dragon Shores after the defeat of Gnasty Gnorc in the previous game. He then finds himself transported to a different dimension then intended, because some new faces requested a dragons help to defeat a bustling ruler named Ripto. Spyro now must go around collecting orbs and defeating enemy’s to stop Ripto and be able to go to Dragon Shores.

Story and Game play

The second of Insomniac’s trilogy improved vastly in game play. Spyro moves now are now much tighter and easier to control, but still a tad clunky. All of the original moves are back with some new innovative ones. Spyro can now swim, climb, and head bash! These new moves keep the game interesting and fresh. The flying mechanics were also improved with a new move introduced called hover. At the end of Spyro’s signature glide you can now have some extra air time which is much needed for some tricky areas. Along with an improved move set comes a new cast with full voice acting. This I feel puts the player in a more immersive world since you now interact with other characters more often.

I completed the game 100%!

Final Thoughts

Compared to the first Spyro this game had a much needed overhaul. I really enjoyed playing the second game and definitely think that if anyone is interested in classic ps1 era games to try this one out!
